The Amazing Husky

The Siberian Husky, Samoyed, and Alaskan Malamute are all breeds directly descended from the original sled dog, with DNA analysis confirms is one of the oldest breeds of dog.

It is thought that the term "husky" is a corruption of the nickname "Esky" once applied to the Eskimos and subsequently to their dogs.

The Husky has been described as a behavioural representative of the domestic dog's forebear, the wolf, exhibiting a wide range of its ancestors' behaviour. Behavioural issues include a tendency to roam and to make escape attempts, they are known to howl rather than bark, are affectionate with people of all ages, good with children, can have a high energy indoors, have special exercise needs, high prey drive and will pursue cats and other small animals, and may be destructive without proper care.

They also need the frequent companionship of people and other dogs. Siberian Huskies are strong, compact, working sled dogs. They have large "snow shoe" feet appear to be webbed and have hair between the toes to help keep them warm and for gripping on ice. The medium-length, double coat is thick and can withstand temperatures as low as -58° to -76° F (-50° to -60° C).
